Commercial Lines Underwriter

Insurance Placement Solutions (IPS) has an immediate opening for a Field Commercial Underwriter with our client in the greater Hartford, Connecticut area. This is a unique opportunity for an experienced middle-market underwriter who enjoys building agency relationships, managing a profitable territory, and driving new business growth. The ideal candidate will have an established network within the Hartford market and thrive in a field-based environment.

Following the training period, this role will require regular agency visits throughout the Rocky Hill, CT area, averaging two to three visits per week.

Field Commercial Underwriter Responsibilities

• Develop and manage a local territory focused on new business opportunities for Commercial Package, Commercial Auto, Workers’ Compensation, and Umbrella lines
• Build and maintain strong relationships with agency partners to drive profitable growth and long-term business success
• Evaluate and underwrite new and renewal middle market commercial accounts using sound technical underwriting principles
• Analyze complex risks, determine appropriate pricing, and negotiate terms with agency partners
• Manage an existing portfolio while identifying opportunities for new business development
• Collaborate with Commercial Sales and internal underwriting teams to achieve business objectives
• Provide market intelligence and support product development initiatives
• Ensure compliance with company underwriting guidelines and regulatory requirements
• Mentor and assist in the development of underwriting staff as needed
• Travel throughout the assigned territory and attend quarterly meetings at corporate headquarters

Qualifications

• 7+ years of Commercial Lines underwriting experience with a strong focus on Middle Market accounts
• Experience underwriting Commercial Package, Commercial Auto, Workers’ Compensation, and Umbrella coverage
• Umbrella underwriting experience is required
• Experience with portfolio management and profitable growth strategies
• Strong technical underwriting, risk assessment, and pricing expertise
• Working knowledge of Facultative Reinsurance
• Established relationships within the greater Hartford, CT insurance marketplace preferred
• Excellent communication, negotiation, organization, and desk management skills
• Ability to independently manage a field territory while balancing multiple priorities

Preferred Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree preferred
• CPCU, AU, ARM, CIC, or similar industry designations are a plus
• Guidewire experience preferred
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite

Compensation

• Salary range: $111,913 – $129,927, commensurate with experience and credentials
